Lockdown diaries

I found myself in dire straits as the lockdown was announced in 2020. Thoughts of no office,  no yoga class, no shopping,  no vacations, no evening walks in the park , no meeting friends and family were extremely disappointing.  The outbreak of the virus had caused fear, panic in my family and we were confined to home. The initial days were filled with chaos - the fear-inducing videos and language on news channels and social media created a lot of anxiety.  We decided to turn a blind eye towards the ongoing pandemic and concentrate on how to adjust to the new norm of working from home while working at home.  The initial days were fun-filled with food being in the spotlight. We collaborated to try new cuisines, surfed various cooking sites, connected with aunties and grannies to fetch traditional, forgotten recipes. Trying street food, authentic dishes, deserts of all sorts, induced a great sense of satisfaction.Team work at the kitchen kindl...

Turning Point

Once upon a time, I was an ever worrying mom. Every March, I was struck with a fever. The school has announced the exam schedule and my head went spinning. How do I prepare Amogha for the final exams? She is still eight. She does not know how to plan. She does not realize how exams have to be taken. So many subjects to cover in such a short time span, how do I get her to be serious? How do I help? While my thoughts were revolving around the exams and planning, Amogha was overjoyed by the thoughts of the much awaited mango season, the vacations, the ice creams..    There were 30 days for the exams to begin. And the countdown had begun inside me. I decided to be a super mom, and I thought, let me put up the best plan. Let us make the best use of the next 30 days, there should be no last moment preparations, no hurry. I need to come up with a neat schedule for my daughter, plus a revision plan . I picked up a paper and wrote a schedule for two weeks, feeling much elated, called ...

Lost and found

It all started the day I could not fit in my favourite Kurti. I stepped on the weighing scale... woila.. I had almost touched a century.. well no cheers for hitting a century and I am the man of this match without a trophy! What followed was a series of advices , lectures on what to eat  - what not to - when to - when not to ,  recommendations of diet plans of film stars, wowww... this was nothing short of an IPL match, with various friends , family members , colleagues trying to buy me in their own teams of weight reduction. I started off one-day series as a skipper..apparently skipping my dinner and skipping something i love the most - RICE. Trying dry phulkas, disastrous jowar rottis, gave me a feeling, these dishes came all the way from the thar desert , burnt in the scorching sun searching for water. So was my mood trying to eat them- all dry. My only hope was the salads, sabjis that were giving me immense satisfaction. And i ate the salads, sabjis more and ...

A great getaway!

We sat at the back of the car, I was getting squished in the tiny pouch. I tried hard to peep out and take a look out of the window. I noticed several beautiful trees as we passed by and realised we were travelling away from the city. "Amma, I am hungry,  wailed the little girl. When do we reach? what is for breakfast? it is so hot!! " Why do kids talk so much, i wondered. I must admit , I always admired this little girl, bubbling with enthusiasm and a blithe spirit.  The car halted and the mother was all excited..aah here we are..finally.. I sensed the mother was feeling at home as soon as we reached the place and I felt the place was very close to her heart. I took a big leap , jumped out of the pouch and woillaaa...  what a mind blowing view.. "Get up, Get up...  we are on a day out, this place seems awesome.. " i rejoiced turning towards my pals‐ the sketch pens , the oil pastels , the paints. We were all looking forward to get out of the house since months, tha...
